Image Inventory Search
The 19th-century weather records maintained by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) consist of over 600 microfilm reels, each containing approximately 1,000 images (pages) of records. These records have been scanned and indexed for easier access.
The tool below displays the number of available images by month for each weather station. To use it, first select the state and then choose a station from the list. The tool will generate a table showing the number of images available each month. Each year is represented as a row in the table, with 12 numbers indicating the count of images for each month. At the end of each row, you will find the microfilm reel number corresponding to the images; this typically starts with "AE0" or "AC0." This reel number can be used to locate the images for both online and offline requests. While most images are included in this index, not all are available.
Images are available from the NCEI’s Common Access portal (search keyword FORTS, or view directly at https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/access/search/data-search/forts-publication).
You may contact the Midwestern Regional Climate Center service office to obtain images.
